2008 ford escape review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. One of ford's best gets better. introductionthe ford escape has been thoroughly updated for 2008, reinforcing the character and appeal that have made it america's perennial best-selling small sport-utility vehicle. The improvements nearly cover the spectrum, and inject a new level of refinement. The escape's standard safety features are upgraded significantly for 2008.  we'd call the escape a little truck among small suvs. Its new styling deliberately invokes ford's larger, truck-based expedition and explorer sport-utilities. Escape's ride height and seating position are a bit higher than competitors such as the honda cr-v, and it can tow up to 3,500 pounds, which is substantially more than most other vehicles in the class.  yet the ford escape still delivers the advantages of unit-body, car-based competitors such as the honda cr-v. All variants, including the v6 and escape hybrid, deliver some of best epa mileage ratings in the class. All, including the gas-electric hybrid, are offered with either front- or all-wheel drive. For the most part, the hybrid drives just like a conventional gas-only escape. It's a well-executed package. Folding the rear seats opens a good sized cargo area with a flat floor, and space behind the seat surpasses that in the trunk of the typical sedan. Interior storage options have improved considerably. The finish is more upscale and pleasing, and feature function and switches are among the best.  safety features that were extra-cost options on lower-trim models are now standard across the board, including ford's roll stability control system. Escape now sets the class benchmark for safety features.  there's a ford escape model for most tastes and needs. Dollar for feature, ford escape prices have dropped considerably the past few years. The premium for the escape hybrid has also decreased. It's now less than $2,000 more than a comparably equipped limited.  the ford escape remains one of the more appealing vehicles in its class, regardless of price, and certainly one of the better values. The xls comes with cloth upholstery, air conditioning, power windows, mirrors and locks, an am/fm stereo with cd and auxiliary jack, rear window defroster and 16-inch steel wheels.    the escape xlt 20,880) and xlt 4wd 22,360) add more standard features, including upgraded cloth upholstery, a power driver's seat, cruise control, privacy glass and 16-inch alloy wheels. The cargo convenience group 395) includes a retractable cargo area cover and a compartmentalized rear storage bin. The audiophile package 695) includes a high-power stereo with seven speakers, subwoofer and the in-dash cd changer. The limited luxury package 795) adds dual-zone automatic climate control, heated front seats and a back-up warning system. The audiophile and navigation package 2,695) includes the stereo upgrade and ford's touch-screen navigation system; in the hybrid, it also adds a meter that graphically and immediately demonstrates the benefits of hybrid drive, and helps the driver maximize fuel economy. Other options include cruise control 225), cd changer 295), a power moonroof 795), floor mats 55), 16-inch alloy wheels 375), 17-inch chromed wheels 695), and a class ii towing package 345).  safety features have been upgraded substantially for 2008, making equipment that was previously optional on lower trim levels standard across the board, and setting the class benchmark for small sport-utilities. Passive safety features include front- and side-impact airbags for front occupants and curtain-type head protection airbags for all outboard seats. The side curtains can remain inflated for several seconds in the event of a rollover, and are designed to slide between the side glass and occupants if the people are oddly seated or resting heads against a window. Rsc adds a second gyroscopic roll-rate sensor to the typical stability control package, measuring the escape's roll angle and roll rate and applying countermeasures (such as braking one of the wheels or reducing power) to increase rollover resistance. walkaroundthe 2008 ford escape has been re-styled more thoroughly than a quick glance might suggest. None of its major body panels are common to previous models, but the redesign is evolutionary and the most obvious changes are in the details, or jewelry, as designers call them. In an impressionistic way, the new escape will look familiar to those who have owned previous escapes, or those who pay attention to what others drive.  as such, the new escape has the air of a conventional, truck-based suv, with a more rugged look than many other small, sedan-platform sport-utilities such as the honda cr-v. For starters, escape sits a bit higher than many competitors (8. 1 inches of ground clearance), and the high profile is enhanced by its design.  the new grille looks like it was designed for a truck. The headlights are essentially connected to the grille, and shaped to create a family resemblance with ford's edge crossover suv. Yet the grille itself is tall and flat and stacked right on top of a skid plate-type fascia that flows under the bumper. Escape's beltline, or the crease that runs just under the windows, is high, too, and its roof pillars are blacked out. The taillights have a clear band that wraps around the rear corners. The lower bumpers and rocker panels are now painted to match the body on all models, rather than molded in a matte finish. In total, the effect is cleaner and more polished than previous models, and it's all quite handsome.  the trim levels are easy to distinguish from the front of the car. The base escape xls has a chrome grille and body-colored fascia from the bumper down. The xlt is identical, except for prominent fog lights in the front bumper. This adds the chrome grille and more, with brightwork flowing down into the skid plate and bumper. It looks like a big, shiny t on the front of the vehicle.  some changes to the new escape are functional more than aesthetic. The side mirrors are larger than before, but ford claims their shape generates less noise as air speeds over them. The roof, too, is designed to reduce interior noise. Recessed channels running its length are intended to move air more quietly over the surface. Horizontal ribs underneath the panel add structure, which limits flex in the metal and reduces booming noise inside at high speeds.  we're fond of a couple of features in back of the escape. A new step pad on the bumper provides secure footing for anyone who steps up to put something on the roof rack, and the two-piece tailgate is handy. The rear glass can be popped open with the key fob, so dropping small items like a gym bag into the cargo area is much easier than it might be with some competitors, which require hefting the entire gate upward. interiorthe 2008 ford escape interior is all new, and we like it. It's not significantly roomier or a leap forward in design, but it's well thought out and well executed. It's a definite improvement in ergonomic function and overall visual appeal, and it makes a nicer place to spend time.  this is one of ford's best interiors in years in terms of the look and feel of materials used. It looked like the lacquered finish on a fine piano. The satiny black or silver used in lower trim levels isn't bad, either. 2001 ford escape review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. It rides smoothly and gets strong acceleration performance from an optional v6. Best of all, its price is relatively low. An additional $1400 buys the optional 3. 0-liter v6.  escape xls comes with a high level of standard equipment, including air conditioning, power windows and an am/fm/cd stereo. Xlt adds abs, cruise control, map lights, a cassette player, a rear auxiliary power outlet, better seats and aluminum wheels instead of steel ones. An escape loaded with leather, v6 and six-disc in-dash cd goes for less than $25,000.  the ford escape and mazda tribute are the first two vehicle that the two companies developed jointly through the entire research and development phase. walkaroundford designers worked to achieve a balance between the suv's image of confidence, ruggedness and versatility with an image of agility and fun. Its forward-poised stance, large wheel lips, wide body cladding and an integrated bumper guard give a functional look. The escape is wider than other suvs, which gives it an aggressive look. Short front and rear overhangs add more to the sports appeal. The escape looks bolder and more aggressive than the honda cr-v, which looks dainty and dated by comparison. Outside door handles are easy to grab and feel like they're going to last.  accessories from ford outfitters include a snap-in pet barrier and a system to haul two mountain bikes in the cargo area. Bike racks can also be mounted on the roof; the standard roof rack with crossbars holds up to 100 pounds. We don't like the idea of getting vehicles with tall ground clearances then bolting running boards on them. Ford says it designed the running boards on the escape so that they do not lower the ground clearance. They are expected to be popular on the escape and are designed to make it easier to install kayaks, snowboards and other toys on the roof rack. Likewise, the rear bumper was designed to aid roof access. interiorford claims the escape is the most spacious of the small suvs (at 133. 9 cubic feet). With the split 60/40 rear seats folded up to accommodate up to five passengers it provides 33. 0 cubic feet. Entering and exiting the vehicle is aided by a low doorsill height and wide door openings.  front-seat roominess is similar to that of the explorer. Rear seats offer more knee room that what is found in the honda cr-v. White-faced instruments, in vogue these days, are in a straightforward instrument panel. Side airbags are optional.  the audio system and heating, ventilation and air conditioning controls in the center stack are angled slightly toward the driver to ease reach while driving. Ford engineers say they tested the placement of the controls by using blindfolded occupants. In-dash single cd player is standard; a 300-watt, six-disc, in-dash cd player is available. driving impressionsport-utility vehicles are not sports cars. In spite of that, california's twisting highway 1 is an enjoyable drive in the escape. Handling response is relatively taut without that mushiness that characterizes suvs with big off-road tires and long-travel suspensions. On muddy fire roads pocked with puddles and potholes, the escape is a blast.  steering is responsive. It feels direct and accurate without a big dead spot in the center. There's enough feeling in the steering to impart a sense of control. Though this is not a sports car, the tires provide respectable grip in paved corners. When pushed beyond their limits, the front tires start slipping before the rear tires. Just like most front-wheel-drive sedans. Called understeer, this means the escape will describe a wider and wider arc through a corner as it is driven harder into a turn. So it's expected and predictable. Simply back off the throttle and it tightens its line. The escape provides surprisingly good transient response in a series of left-right-left corners. This permits quick, yet smooth, driving. Two passengers never paused in an in-depth marketing discussion despite the fact that we were escaping at a brisk pace down highway 1.  the optional v6 engine delivers good acceleration performance. While there's no such thing as too much power, i never felt lacking in the escape. The transmission shifts smoothly up and down appropriately for the situation and the engine's broad power band never lugs or strains. It isn't the smoothest v6 on the market, nor is it the roughest. A car-like ride makes it easy to live with. AM/FM✔ Power Windows✔ Anti-lock Brakes✔ Cruise Control✔ CD Player✔ Aluminum Wheels✔ Air Conditioning✔ Alloy Wheels

1997 ford explorer review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Virtually every manufacturer selling cars in the u. Last year that meant 402,663 units, and that made the explorer the third best selling vehicle in the country, trailing only a pair of pickup trucks.  with the addition of an excellent new overhead cam v6 engine this year, the explorer's numbers are likely to get even better. The new v6, which has a single cam over each bank of cylinders, with two valves per cylinder, displaces 4. 0 liters, produces 205 horsepower and 250 pound-feet of torque, delivered to the wheels via a new five-speed automatic transmission. The normal mode is auto. This mode continually monitors and adjusts power to the front wheels to minimize slip. The 4x4 high mode electronically locks the transfer case in high gear, providing a 50/50 torque split between the front and rear wheels. This mode is primarily for off road and extreme winter conditions. The 4x4 low mode switches the transfer case to the lower gear ranges for serious off-roading.  explorer permutations are numerable. Depending on certain option packages, the new v6 with the five-speed automatic can be added to the xlt for $425. The explorer introduced softer lines and rounded edges and set the prevailing suv style in the process. That look continues. The distinctive, and large, grille opening is flanked by wraparound headlights. The p235/75r15 tires are mounted on cast aluminum wheels.  the front suspension is independent, using ford's short and long arm design. At the rear--a vestige of its truck heritage--is a two-leaf variable rate spring for each wheel, which accounts for the explorer's ride characteristics, about which more in a moment.  there are disc brakes all around and abs is standard, features that give the explorer an edge over many of its competitors.  we liked the rear liftgate a lot. There is a simple t handle marked gate on one side, window on the other. Turn towards gate and the top-hinged door rises easily and parks well up and out of the way. Turn the handle towards window and the window can be raised by itself. Another feature we liked is an interior power lock/unlock button on top of the left rear wheel well that operates all the door locks. Privacy glass is part of the xlt package. interiorthis is a sport-utility truck, don't forget, so there is some climbing to be done getting in. But entry height is not a serious problem. Shorter folks may find the optional running boards helpful.  the overall design of the interior is quite good, featuring the flowing shapes and soft-edged buttons and controls now favored by ford. The various controls are king-size, making them easy to operate when the vehicle is moving, and we give the overall appearance of the instrument panels top marks. The front buckets are covered in high-quality cloth with a subtle, subdued pattern which was a welcome relief from some of the throwback psychedelia we've run into lately. The seats were among the most supportive in this class, with aggressive thigh and side bolsters. Very comfortable.  the explorer's other strong suit is best-in-class roominess. In fact, roominess is perhaps the key element in this vehicle's perennial popularity. It is, as mentioned, easy to get in and out of. Visibility all around is quite good in spite of the rather large b and c roof pillars. The driver enjoys that secure, command-of-the-road seating position that's helped to make sport-utilities and pickup trucks so popular.  however, the explorer doesn't really feel like a truck on the road. Well, maybe a little--but only a little. While the ride is far from bouncy and sharp, it is more springy than any sedan, and the reason has to be those antique leaf springs in the rear. The suspension does do a good job absorbing road irregularities, though, and that's how it differs from trucks. Firm but comfortable, with a strong sense of control.  we were a little surprised at the level of wind noise in the 40-60 mph range in what otherwise is a solid, put-together vehicle.  also, the new v6 becomes noticeably audible under hard acceleration. On the other hand, that's common for sport-utility vehicles, and the engine is smooth and quiet in normal operation.  we were very pleasantly surprised by the straight-line performance those 205 horses provided. Nevertheless, it launched with enthusiasm and maintained that enthusiasm to a degree that would calm any concerns about safe merging with traffic.  although the explorer has racked up virtually all of its huge sales numbers with the standard overhead valve engine, the overhead cam version is a whole order of magnitude better and we recommend it strongly.  at moderate speed on a favorite section of twisty bits, the explorer was quite good: no lean in turns, the steering was exceptionally quick and precise, no wander in a straight line and on the narrow road did not give the impression it was about to shoulder on-coming traffic into the ditch. It simply does not drive large. summarythe explorer continues to be the best-selling suv in the country, even though it isn't necessarily the best suv in the country, at least if real off-road use is a factor. Modest ground clearance and a long wheelbase limit its usefulness in rough country.  what seems to keep the explorer on top is its roominess, solid reputation for durability, quality engineering, class-leading looks and its overall reputation as the leader. And it's not the least expensive, by any means. But for the kind of all-around uses most families find for their sport-utilities, the explorer's formula is still tough to beat. assembled inst. 2007 ford explorer review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. A family favorite with a strong record for safety. introductionford explorer is a traditional midsize suv with body-on-frame construction. Available with v6 or v8 power, it competes against the chevy trailblazer, jeep grand cherokee, toyota 4runner, and nissan pathfinder.  explorer was completely redesigned for the 2006 model year and we were pleased with the new steering, the new suspension, and the new brakes, all of which were vastly improved over the previous-generation. The latest explorer is quieter than previous models, and it rides better. It also leans less in corners and the brakes are more responsive. The rear seats fold flatter, and the interior has been improved throughout. More important, it's a very nice vehicle that's pleasant to live with and it compares well with the competition.  with the v8 engine, the explorer is rated to tow up to a whopping 7,300 pounds; that's about as much as a jeep grand cherokee with a hemi. And explorer is rated to carry up to 1,520 pounds of payload.  explorer earned the best possible impact protection rating in the government's crash tests: five stars for the driver in a frontal impact, the front-seat passenger in a frontal impact, front-seat occupants in a side impact, and rear-seat occupants in a side impact. (this was in the national highway traffic safety administration's 2006 model-year new car assessment program.) ford says the explorer is designed to meet all known federal frontal- and side-impact crash requirements through 2010.  for 2007, ford has simplified the model lineup. The safety canopy side air-curtain system is now standard on eddie bauer and limited. An auxiliary audio input jack is now standard, and power-retracting running boards and heated windshield wipers are available. And the available rear-seat dvd entertainment center comes with a larger, eight-inch screen.  the most important change for 2007 might be the new interior door handles, of all things. We found the door pulls on the 2006 models awkward, traceable to thick armrests engineered for crash protection. This situation has been improved for 2007.  though car-based suvs, or crossovers, such as the ford edge are gaining in popularity for their smoother ride, better handling, and easier interior access, the explorer remains a good choice for families that tow. Explorer's truck-based chassis gives it towing capability, while its clever independent rear suspension smoothes the ride for back-seat passengers. lineupthe 2007 ford explorer lineup comprises the xlt 2wd 25,300), xlt 4wd 27,595), eddie bauer 2wd 28,300), eddie bauer 4wd 30,595), limited 2wd 31,400), and limited 4wd 33,659). Xlt options include leather seating surfaces with heated front seats 995), heated windshield 300), and navigation 2,505). A power-folding third row is optional on all models. The third-row seat comes standard on the limited, but can be deleted for credit (-$375), providing a flatter cargo floor.  other options include a power glass sunroof 850); rear-seat dvd entertainment 1,295); power adjustable pedals 150); rear heat and air conditioning 675), sirius satellite radio 195); and power-retractable running boards 695).  safety features include the same roll stability control system already used by volvo and land rover. It intervenes with throttle and brakes when the computer senses an impending tip over. Other safety features standard on all explorers are seat-mounted side-impact air bags, adaptive energy-absorbing steering column, and passenger classifier in the front passenger seat. Safety canopy air bags, standard on limited and bauer, are optional 560) on xlt. walkaroundup front, ford explorer looks like an f-150 pickup with finer, scaled-down features. At the same time, its generous use of chrome, big-and-bold lamps, and square-cornered aero mirrors make this latest-generation explorer look more like a lexus suv than a ford, and we mean that in the most complimentary way.  between the elaborate lamps front and back, however, explorer is a big, empty box with five large doors and a whole bunch of space inside.  each explorer trim level presents its own visual personality. There are dark wood accents in most models and darker, richer wood for the eddie bauer version. The graphics are accented with metal surrounds both shiny and matte. On the downside, we saw a fair amount of glare reflected off the dash top onto the windshield.  the seats are at once more supportive and more comfortable than in older explorers, where we found them a bit hard. The colors and trims and combinations are elegant and tasteful, the metallic trims just about right, not overdone.  second-row seats are available as a 60/40 split bench with recline adjustment, or as two bucket seats and a console. The bucket seats are more comfortable for adults, but the bench seats fold down better for cargo.  the third row, when ordered, sits almost two inches higher than in an '05 or earlier explorer, so kids can see out better. The third row is always a 50/50 split, but is available with manual or power folding and unfolding.  the cargo floor is completely flat when all the seats are folded, with almost no forward rise (2 degrees as opposed to 10 in older models). The five-seater has slightly more room with the seats folded.  the dvd-based navigation system is very easy to use, with excellent colors and graphics, and a big eight-inch display.  the interior door handles are awkward to use, though this improves with familiarity. driving impressiontwo engines are available for the ford explorer. Both powertrains are smooth and quiet. With the lighter v6, the explorer is a bit easier to turn and maneuver, but both engines are pleasant and competent. It meets federal tier ii, bin 4 emissions requirements for ultra low emissions vehicle ii (ulev ii) status. It develops 292 horsepower, and 300 pound-feet of torque. The v8 delivers low emissions as well, meeting the tier ii, bin 5 federal standard, which is compliant with california's low emissions vehicle ii (lev ii) standard. The suspension is relatively supple, giving the explorer a nice ride on rough streets. Yet the explorer does not lean excess.
