2001 ford f-150 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. New supercrew is best light-duty crew cab available. introductionthe f-150 is available in every imaginable pickup truck configuration. It can act like a serious work truck, an off-road toy, or a luxurious everyday vehicle that doubles as a highly capable weekend tool. There's even a hot rod.  it comes in a myriad of bed lengths, two different body styles, and now three distinct cab configurations. Crew cabs have become the big fad in compact and mid-size trucks the past couple of years, but with the exception of the tried-and-true super-long heavy-duty models, this new full-size ford crew cab is by far the most comfortable of the new trucks. Overall length is kept short by using an ultra-short bed that measures just 5 1/2 feet; though the bed is a compromise, it relieves the driver of the daily burden of maneuvering a pickup that's as long as an aircraft carrier. The supercrew is equipped like a luxury sport-utility, with power-adjustable pedals and optional moonroof, rear-seat entertainment system, and a handsome leather interior.  as for the rest of the 2001 f-150 line, power-adjustable pedals are standard on all lariat models and optional on xl and xlt trim lines. Antilock brakes (abs) are standard throughout the f-150 line, and remote keyless entry is now a standard feature on xlt models. lineupthree engines are available: the standard engine is a 4. 2-liter v6 engine that generates 202 horsepower. The optional 4. 6-liter v8 produces 220 horsepower. The 5. 4-liter v8 produces 260 horsepower. And there are three trim levels: xl, xlt, and lariat. With colors and options thrown in, the model matrix is huge. walkaroundthe f-150 is a stylish truck, with much more attention paid to aerodynamic performance than either the dodge or gm pickups. It is rounder, friendlier and looks much more like a car than the dodge or gm. That may be part of the reason it outsells all other pickup trucks by a considerable margin. The current chevrolet and gmc trucks are still pretty new (they were redesigned for the 1999 model year), but their conservative styling doesn't look as modern as the ford's. The dodge ram looks long in the tooth, by comparison. The f-150's aerodynamic hood falls away very rapidly from the base of the windshield so it's easier to see what's immediately in front of the truck; that's handy for maneuvering off road, for parking, and when maneuvering in tight city traffic. interiorin some ways, the ford f-150 interior is superior in flavor to the gm and dodge trucks. The f-150 takes its interior design cues from the company's successful passenger cars, such as the ford taurus and lincoln continental. The designers adapted these cues to the pickup's large cab. The curves, surfaces, textures, instrumentation and graphics inside the ford f-150 are more adventurous, more modern, and better executed than the competition, big and bold but not outsized for a big vehicle.  the f-150 xlt has dual air bags with a passenger-side deactivation switch. They offer a lot of interior space for the money. The xlt's cloth seats have a recline feature and a lumbar support on the driver's side for even more driving comfort.  all pickups share another trait: a relatively high ride height, even on 2x4 models. Getting into and out of the rear seats was easy. The rear seats are comfortable and offer good legroom, allowing passengers to slide their feet under the front seats. Rear-seat comfort is such that and adult should be able to ride back there for longer trips.  supercrew's rear seats fold down (and are split 60/40), offering a nearly flat cargo space. It's a great place to put cargo or for big dogs. Small storage compartments behind the front seats add utility. driving impressiontwo-wheel-drive f-150s use conventional steel leaf springs at the rear and a coil spring independent front suspension. We find the brakes on ford trucks to be average in stopping power and average in fade characteristics.  although the optional 4. 6-liter v8 engine is rated at 220 horsepower and 290 foot-pounds of torque, we don't think it's as good a performer in many respects as the small v8 engines from gm and dodge. It's a good, solid engine, with millions of examples on the road, and it sounds good at full throttle, but we find it a little duff for all-around street use, and we would certainly find it wanting if we had to haul anything heavy or tow a trailer up a mountain road. For any customer contemplating those kinds of duties, the 5. 4-liter v8 engine is a much better choice. summaryford's f-150 is still among the most car-like of the full-size pickup trucks, with slick looks, pleasing performance, a comfortable cabin, and a proven powertrain.  ford's new f-150 supercrew is the most comfortable of the light-duty crew cabs currently available. model lineup4x2 styleside 120-in. 1998 ford f-150 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. The trendiest of the trucks. introductionford's f-series pickups are proof that barnyard workhorse trucks will never be their squared-off selves again. Wheelbase lengths of 119. 9 in., 138. 5 in. Wheelbase, which means all f-250s are either extended cabs or long cargo beds. But, by and large, there ought to be something here for just about anybody. The xlt trim includes several items that might otherwise be options. The total for this high-line truck came to $31,450. In smoothness, it embarrasses every other full-size truck engine on the market. The power delivery is crisp and responsive, and to good low-end power it adds excellent mid-range and higher-speed power to make short work of real-world demands such as quick acceleration to freeway speeds. It replaces the ancient twin i-beam, and we're thankful. With this suspension, the ride is far better, handling is superior, steering feel is drastically improved and directional stability, such as when traveling at highway speeds in a severe crosswind, is immensely enhanced. We would expect that tire wear would also be better, as this was one of the many weak points of the twin i-beam. With the 40/60 split-bench front seat, driver and passenger have individually reclining backrests. What can serve as the center backrest is also a folding armrest; when folded forward, it provides a large cupholder and capacious bin. Inside this storage bin are places for coins, cassette tapes and so forth, and a divider which, when removed, allows space for an 8 1/2 x 11 tablet. There are a pair of cupholders in the instrument panel, and a goodly number of the expected storage compartments and map pockets here and there  the view outward is superb, as the f-series styling includes a low beltline and big windows all around. Even fairly short drivers should have decent forward visibility. The only vision-related gripe we had was a vertically narrow inside rear-view mirror, which cut down on the view to the rear  all supercabs include a third door on the passenger's side for entry to the back seat. This door is operable once the passenger's door is open, and can be opened from inside or out. Two adults should be reasonably comfortable on longer trips in the back seat. With the rear seat folded forward there's a flat, sturdy steel surface, great for carrying toolboxes or large amounts of luggage. driving impressionpeople familiar with trucks, particularly those familiar with ford trucks, will find the driving experience in the new f-series greatly enhanced. A high degree of directional stability adds to safety and comfort because it keeps the vehicle headed down its intended path  ride, too, is remarkably good. One big problem with pickup trucks has always been how poorly they tend to ride when empty; this can become really annoying on long trips down concrete interstates where trucks can bounce ceaselessly. There's no truck-like roar or rumble, no feeling that it starts thrashing at higher speeds. Whether driving around the city or taking an extended highway cruise, the 5. 4-liter triton engine is the most velvety full-size pickup truck engine we've encountered. The smaller, 4. 6-liter version is equally smooth, but it's less powerful, and we highly recommend the stronger 5. 4-liter v8. But the ford is certainly the sleekest of the bunch  there's a lot to like about it in addition to the look. The interior is extraordinary, the triton v8s are silky and strong, the ride and drive is exceptional and it's full to the brim with worthwhile features. 1997 ford explorer review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Virtually every manufacturer selling cars in the u. Last year that meant 402,663 units, and that made the explorer the third best selling vehicle in the country, trailing only a pair of pickup trucks.  with the addition of an excellent new overhead cam v6 engine this year, the explorer's numbers are likely to get even better. The new v6, which has a single cam over each bank of cylinders, with two valves per cylinder, displaces 4. 0 liters, produces 205 horsepower and 250 pound-feet of torque, delivered to the wheels via a new five-speed automatic transmission. The normal mode is auto. This mode continually monitors and adjusts power to the front wheels to minimize slip. The 4x4 high mode electronically locks the transfer case in high gear, providing a 50/50 torque split between the front and rear wheels. This mode is primarily for off road and extreme winter conditions. The 4x4 low mode switches the transfer case to the lower gear ranges for serious off-roading.  explorer permutations are numerable. Depending on certain option packages, the new v6 with the five-speed automatic can be added to the xlt for $425. The explorer introduced softer lines and rounded edges and set the prevailing suv style in the process. That look continues. The distinctive, and large, grille opening is flanked by wraparound headlights. The p235/75r15 tires are mounted on cast aluminum wheels.  the front suspension is independent, using ford's short and long arm design. At the rear--a vestige of its truck heritage--is a two-leaf variable rate spring for each wheel, which accounts for the explorer's ride characteristics, about which more in a moment.  there are disc brakes all around and abs is standard, features that give the explorer an edge over many of its competitors.  we liked the rear liftgate a lot. There is a simple t handle marked gate on one side, window on the other. Turn towards gate and the top-hinged door rises easily and parks well up and out of the way. Turn the handle towards window and the window can be raised by itself. Another feature we liked is an interior power lock/unlock button on top of the left rear wheel well that operates all the door locks. Privacy glass is part of the xlt package. interiorthis is a sport-utility truck, don't forget, so there is some climbing to be done getting in. But entry height is not a serious problem. Shorter folks may find the optional running boards helpful.  the overall design of the interior is quite good, featuring the flowing shapes and soft-edged buttons and controls now favored by ford. The various controls are king-size, making them easy to operate when the vehicle is moving, and we give the overall appearance of the instrument panels top marks. The front buckets are covered in high-quality cloth with a subtle, subdued pattern which was a welcome relief from some of the throwback psychedelia we've run into lately. The seats were among the most supportive in this class, with aggressive thigh and side bolsters. Very comfortable.  the explorer's other strong suit is best-in-class roominess. In fact, roominess is perhaps the key element in this vehicle's perennial popularity. It is, as mentioned, easy to get in and out of. Visibility all around is quite good in spite of the rather large b and c roof pillars. The driver enjoys that secure, command-of-the-road seating position that's helped to make sport-utilities and pickup trucks so popular.  however, the explorer doesn't really feel like a truck on the road. Well, maybe a little--but only a little. While the ride is far from bouncy and sharp, it is more springy than any sedan, and the reason has to be those antique leaf springs in the rear. The suspension does do a good job absorbing road irregularities, though, and that's how it differs from trucks. Firm but comfortable, with a strong sense of control.  we were a little surprised at the level of wind noise in the 40-60 mph range in what otherwise is a solid, put-together vehicle.  also, the new v6 becomes noticeably audible under hard acceleration. On the other hand, that's common for sport-utility vehicles, and the engine is smooth and quiet in normal operation.  we were very pleasantly surprised by the straight-line performance those 205 horses provided. Nevertheless, it launched with enthusiasm and maintained that enthusiasm to a degree that would calm any concerns about safe merging with traffic.  although the explorer has racked up virtually all of its huge sales numbers with the standard overhead valve engine, the overhead cam version is a whole order of magnitude better and we recommend it strongly.  at moderate speed on a favorite section of twisty bits, the explorer was quite good: no lean in turns, the steering was exceptionally quick and precise, no wander in a straight line and on the narrow road did not give the impression it was about to shoulder on-coming traffic into the ditch. It simply does not drive large. summarythe explorer continues to be the best-selling suv in the country, even though it isn't necessarily the best suv in the country, at least if real off-road use is a factor. Modest ground clearance and a long wheelbase limit its usefulness in rough country.  what seems to keep the explorer on top is its roominess, solid reputation for durability, quality engineering, class-leading looks and its overall reputation as the leader. And it's not the least expensive, by any means. But for the kind of all-around uses most families find for their sport-utilities, the explorer's formula is still tough to beat. assembled inst. 2007 ford explorer review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. A family favorite with a strong record for safety. introductionford explorer is a traditional midsize suv with body-on-frame construction. Available with v6 or v8 power, it competes against the chevy trailblazer, jeep grand cherokee, toyota 4runner, and nissan pathfinder.  explorer was completely redesigned for the 2006 model year and we were pleased with the new steering, the new suspension, and the new brakes, all of which were vastly improved over the previous-generation. The latest explorer is quieter than previous models, and it rides better. It also leans less in corners and the brakes are more responsive. The rear seats fold flatter, and the interior has been improved throughout. More important, it's a very nice vehicle that's pleasant to live with and it compares well with the competition.  with the v8 engine, the explorer is rated to tow up to a whopping 7,300 pounds; that's about as much as a jeep grand cherokee with a hemi. And explorer is rated to carry up to 1,520 pounds of payload.  explorer earned the best possible impact protection rating in the government's crash tests: five stars for the driver in a frontal impact, the front-seat passenger in a frontal impact, front-seat occupants in a side impact, and rear-seat occupants in a side impact. (this was in the national highway traffic safety administration's 2006 model-year new car assessment program.) ford says the explorer is designed to meet all known federal frontal- and side-impact crash requirements through 2010.  for 2007, ford has simplified the model lineup. The safety canopy side air-curtain system is now standard on eddie bauer and limited. An auxiliary audio input jack is now standard, and power-retracting running boards and heated windshield wipers are available. And the available rear-seat dvd entertainment center comes with a larger, eight-inch screen.  the most important change for 2007 might be the new interior door handles, of all things. We found the door pulls on the 2006 models awkward, traceable to thick armrests engineered for crash protection. This situation has been improved for 2007.  though car-based suvs, or crossovers, such as the ford edge are gaining in popularity for their smoother ride, better handling, and easier interior access, the explorer remains a good choice for families that tow. Explorer's truck-based chassis gives it towing capability, while its clever independent rear suspension smoothes the ride for back-seat passengers. lineupthe 2007 ford explorer lineup comprises the xlt 2wd 25,300), xlt 4wd 27,595), eddie bauer 2wd 28,300), eddie bauer 4wd 30,595), limited 2wd 31,400), and limited 4wd 33,659). Xlt options include leather seating surfaces with heated front seats 995), heated windshield 300), and navigation 2,505). A power-folding third row is optional on all models. The third-row seat comes standard on the limited, but can be deleted for credit (-$375), providing a flatter cargo floor.  other options include a power glass sunroof 850); rear-seat dvd entertainment 1,295); power adjustable pedals 150); rear heat and air conditioning 675), sirius satellite radio 195); and power-retractable running boards 695).  safety features include the same roll stability control system already used by volvo and land rover. It intervenes with throttle and brakes when the computer senses an impending tip over. Other safety features standard on all explorers are seat-mounted side-impact air bags, adaptive energy-absorbing steering column, and passenger classifier in the front passenger seat. Safety canopy air bags, standard on limited and bauer, are optional 560) on xlt. walkaroundup front, ford explorer looks like an f-150 pickup with finer, scaled-down features. At the same time, its generous use of chrome, big-and-bold lamps, and square-cornered aero mirrors make this latest-generation explorer look more like a lexus suv than a ford, and we mean that in the most complimentary way.  between the elaborate lamps front and back, however, explorer is a big, empty box with five large doors and a whole bunch of space inside.  each explorer trim level presents its own visual personality. There are dark wood accents in most models and darker, richer wood for the eddie bauer version. The graphics are accented with metal surrounds both shiny and matte. On the downside, we saw a fair amount of glare reflected off the dash top onto the windshield.  the seats are at once more supportive and more comfortable than in older explorers, where we found them a bit hard. The colors and trims and combinations are elegant and tasteful, the metallic trims just about right, not overdone.  second-row seats are available as a 60/40 split bench with recline adjustment, or as two bucket seats and a console. The bucket seats are more comfortable for adults, but the bench seats fold down better for cargo.  the third row, when ordered, sits almost two inches higher than in an '05 or earlier explorer, so kids can see out better. The third row is always a 50/50 split, but is available with manual or power folding and unfolding.  the cargo floor is completely flat when all the seats are folded, with almost no forward rise (2 degrees as opposed to 10 in older models). The five-seater has slightly more room with the seats folded.  the dvd-based navigation system is very easy to use, with excellent colors and graphics, and a big eight-inch display.  the interior door handles are awkward to use, though this improves with familiarity. driving impressiontwo engines are available for the ford explorer. Both powertrains are smooth and quiet. With the lighter v6, the explorer is a bit easier to turn and maneuver, but both engines are pleasant and competent. It meets federal tier ii, bin 4 emissions requirements for ultra low emissions vehicle ii (ulev ii) status. It develops 292 horsepower, and 300 pound-feet of torque. The v8 delivers low emissions as well, meeting the tier ii, bin 5 federal standard, which is compliant with california's low emissions vehicle ii (lev ii) standard. The suspension is relatively supple, giving the explorer a nice ride on rough streets. Yet the explorer does not lean excess.
